Slidelines RC - The Final Farewell

The Final Group Photo

This past weekend was the final matsuri for Slidelines RC in Las Vegas, Nevada. I was lucky enough to be able to get out there for the Friday Sesh. The main day being Saturday, but due to scheduling and work back home, this was the only day that worked out for me. It was all about a turn-around for me, but I needed to be there. I didn’t get to slide, but I got to do something I really miss. That is to be a part of the scene and enjoy hanging out, vs. being part of the event, and putting out fires the entire time. It was awesome!

I found myself with mixed emotions with this trip. For those who know, Slidelines has always held a special place for myself and us here at Super-G. Back before there was a SlideLines, we were already in a few years with Super-G. Vegas was always a big supporter and the homie Mike Cronhamn was always hosting these awesome park sessions.

StanceNation Las Vegas 2018

In 2018 we went out to do a demo at StanceNation Las Vegas. We collab’d with Mike and the Vegas crew to make a sick track out there. It was a ton of fun, and right away we felt this connection with the Vegas crew. It was like family from the start.

Desert Breeze Sesh

That weekend we were also able to get some drifting in at one of Mike’s famous park sessions at Desert Breeze. These were what was up in Vegas back then since there wasn’t a dedicated drift track at the time. In fact, back then there were only a few drift tracks scattered around the U.S. . We had a blast out there!

So that weekend, we had brought along a few prizes and we wanted to give some sort of recognition to one person that stood above the rest during the sesh. After getting laps all night, RawFew (Super-G’s drift team at the time) unanimously and without even discussing, had voted for this one guy just straight killing it all night. That guy was Bret Trevino! Yep, even back then, this dude was rippin’ it hard! In talking to him, it was clear he had a passion for what he was doing. Him opening Slidelines was no surprise to many of us.

One Year Anniversary Comp

A few months later (not sure of the timeline, but it seemed a few months) Bret and Dillion were opening up a dedicated Drift spot in Vegas, Slidelines RC! This was an exciting time for RC Drift since there were Tracks/Shops dedicated to RC Drift finally opening. Right away it was clear Mike would be a big part of Slidelines as well, so that was a guarantee it was going to be good!

1st Year Anniversary Comp!

Right away, Slidelines was one of the major players in the Drift game. We made it out there for their 1 year anniversary, and I even got to compete. It was a great time for me! Bret had given what I consider the most memorable Driver’s Meeting ever, even til this day. Back then the rules were loose and just becoming more structured, so the meeting went something like this, “You know what we want to see. Let’s do this!” That really was the truth! I even got to battle my homie Shaine Collins! It was awesome!

Of course we hit Slidelines to give a prototype chassis a shakedown

Over the years, Slidelines has been a part of the fam and a major supporter of SDC (Super Drift Competition) series. Slidelines has produced some of the best drivers in the U.S. and has always made a name for themselves. In fact, Bret was the SDC 2023 U.S. Drift King! When other Drift tracks began opening in Vegas, Slidelines became synonymous with advanced training. With Bret, Raymond, and Cristain always throwring down there, it became known to be the spot to go to if you wanted to really work on your skills and less of a casual drift / hangout spot.

So after 6 years, Bret has decided to close Slidelines. The reason I have mixed emotions on this is, Bret wasn’t in it for the business side of it. He has always had his own thing going on. So quickly Slidelines became more of a spot that Bret put in on to give the Vegas community a dedicated Drift track to run at. So as other facilities start to open in the area, it was time for Bret to start to weigh his options. Coming out of pocket to support a track, as cool as that is, is still an investment. I personally know the ins and outs of owning a track, and I can say without hesitation, it’s not easy, and comes with some serious stress. I am happy for Bret to finally have that weight lifted from his shoulders.

The Final Layout

At the same time I feel saddened that a spot that was always driven by passion has closed its doors. No more memories to be made at Slidelines RC. I admire what Bret and Mike have kept going for the last few years when the monetary support from the community wasn’t there to keep it self sufficient.

I always felt at home here. Even some of the regulars from home were here. What's up Greg!

Hanging out with Mike, Carl, and Ike

I have been thinking of how I was going to close this. I think the best way I can put my feelings into words is, the closing of Slidelines doesn’t mean we are losing Bret and Mike and the Vegas Crew, just that their original spot has now closed. A legendary spot, that’s for sure. One that really served its purpose well for the community. If it weren’t for Slidelines and Bret’s dedication, I’m not sure where RC Drift in Vegas would be. SlideLines came in at a critical time, and propelled the Vegas Drift Scene to where it is today! I think what Bret and Mike have done over the years was a true act of kindness that isn’t readily apparent to most. It’s very easy to overlook the sacrifices Bret has made, but I want to say there are many of us who see it clear as day. For myself, Slidelines is less about the spot (as important and iconic as it is) and more about the people, and those who made it happen.

Thank you for all you do and have done Bret! Props to you for a job well done!
