The Super Drift Competition 2024 (SDC2024) Championship will be held October 4th, 5th, and 6th. Top 32 Meeting at Open (11:30pm) Competitors ONLY!
Update Wednesday Oct. 2, 2024
Practice Groups
As we learned from last year, Practice Groups are a necessity. How well this works will really be up to how well all of you cooperate. We will have 6 groups of 23 drivers. Each group will have an equal amount of time and runs.
The first group will start promptly at 12:10pm (Friday and Saturday), giving every group 4 - 10 minute sessions.
Each group will be 10 minutes TOTAL. The 1 minute warning is your warning to finish your last 2 laps and exit the track. The next group will be allowed to start IMMEDIATELY.
IF this does not run smoothly, we will just eliminate the last hour of practice groups.
During the Practice Groups you are welcome to Stand, Sit, etc. We trust you will all regulate yourselves and be fair with the driving locations. During the Practice Groups you can drive from anywhere around the track (as usual).
HOWEVER, during Qualifying and the Competition, you will be REQUIRED to stand and drive from the Drivers Stand.
Please see diagram below and understand how the Practice Groups will work. Again, the amount of practice you will be allotted as group is based on how smoothly we can make this go.
When you arrive on Friday and Saturday, there will be a limited number of wristbands for each group.
You will choose your group.
Each group will have the same number of 10 minute sessions.
There will be no Tandems during the Practice Groups. This time is to allow everyone to work on their line.
Raffles - Drivers and a Big Fat One
This year we have enough for the Driver’s Raffle (Everyone will win something) as well as a Big Fat Raffle (Open to anyone and everyone)
The Driver’s Raffle will take place Sunday after the Awards Ceremony. Your Competitor Number is your ticket. Prizes are allocated so every competitor wins a prize! You must be present to win. Any time the winner is no present, that prize will be bundled with the next prize!
The Big Fat Raffle with tens of thousands of dollars worth of prizes will be on Saturday after Qualifying. The prizes are amazing this year! We are excited to see you all take home some really good prizes!!! Tickets will go on sale Saturday. Again, winner must be present to win.
The Line
Due to the foreseen limited practice time on Friday and Saturday, the line will be put down for the Meet and Greet on Thursday.
Friday - Day 1 (Qualifying)
When you arrive, you will go to your assigned line to receive your tires (and Competitor Pack if you did not receive it Thursday at the Meet and Greet.) Make sure to read the instructions on your tire package.
UPDATE: September 30, 2024
This is the latest update and supersedes all
The time is here! Super Drift Competition 2024 Worlds at Super-G.
First, we would like to wish all of you safe travels as you make your way to Southern California this upcoming week. Regardless of anything, your safety is what matters the most. So please take your time. The other years, we had heard quite a few stories of people driving some insane hours non-stop. If you find yourself getting tired, pull over and rest. We will be here when you get here, so there’s no hurry. I know, easy for me to say since I’m already here. I know. Just remember, it’ll be more fun when you get here late than not getting here at all. It’ll be more fun for all of us!
The track is good to go and things have changed a bit. We have put in a driver’s stand, which has forced us to narrow up the track area a bit. So even the locals will need to adjust to the new sized layout. Not to mention, very few drive from that side of the track, so it’s going to be new for everyone. Clips and Zones will be laid out Friday morning. Nobody knows what it will be, except for me, and I’m not telling. Don’t even ask. Ha!
Will everyone be required to drive from the driver’s stand?
Yes. With everyone driving from the same area, it has allowed us to lay out the track in such a way there are no blind spots for the competitors. In the past we would hear complaints of barriers and rails blocking part of the zones depending on where people chose to stand. It is impossible to have perfect line of sight from all angles. This is our solution.
Rule Change - Contact with Barriers
I know everyone’s favorite rule in SDC is the “No Contact Allowed” rule. We have changed this rule, and Contact is no longer an automatic Zero. Very minute taps will play. There are also 3 levels of severity that will be judged.
1 - Slight taps where it is obvious to the judges will be scored as a -20 points in qualifying. In Battle it will be equal to 1.5 zones completely missed. The simplest way to explain: One driver completely misses Zone 1, the other driver fills all the zones perfectly and has a slight tap during their run, the driver who missed Zone 1 will will take the win.
2 - Taps that are more severe than “Slight” but not where it would considered a full on crash will be scored as a -40 points in qualifying. In Battle it will be equal to 2.5 zones completely missed. This means, if you pull off a 100 point run and tap during that run, 40 points will be knocked off the final score, so the 100 point run is now a 60 point run.
3 - Hits any harder than that will be considered a crash and will be a Zero in qualifying. In Battle it will be a Loss. Same as a Spin, Straightening, Double Initiation, Out of Bounds, etc.
Be aware, there is a very fine line between 1 and 2. The judges have a very strong grasp of what the differences are, and will apply that consistently throughout all the runs.
Keep in mind, ALL of these scenarios would have been a Zero in the past. The best is to not even leave it up to the judges, but if you do, there will be no contesting the severity awarded. The judges have the best vantage point to make that call.
The primary reason for this change is to further differentiate the qualifying scores. Simply put, a perfect qualifying run with a slight tap should not receive the same placement in qualifying as the person who spins out. This would have made a big difference if everyone wasn't going to make the battles. We did this at SDC2024 SoCal Region Round 4 and it made no real difference in the outcome.
The Raffle
This year the support from the vendors we work with has been overwhelming! It got off to a slow start, but as the time started to close in, more sponsors jumped on board. A few of the sponsors had explained they were donating prizes to hopefully help Super-G recoup some of the expense of hosting this event instead of sponsoring with a monetary donation. This way everyone wins. So this year we will have a Competitors Only Raffle and also a Paid Raffle which will be open to everyone. This will help to pay for the event and allow us to continue to grow SDC every year. The prize pool is AMAZING. I don’t know how we will get through it all. Keep in mind, you must be present to win.
Meet and Greet
This will be on Thursday. Tacos and Hot Dogs are on the menu. We will start serving at 7:00pm ish. At least that’s the plan and we will try our best to make it happen at that time. Food is free for all Competitors.
Run Groups for Practice
As we all found out last year, with 100+ competitors trying to get their practice in, it really means nobody is getting any practice in. We will be having Run Groups for practice.
Qualifying
Initially we had capped the competitors making it to the battles to the Top 127, but since we have (only) 138 Competitors, EVERYONE will make it to the battles, regardless of qualifying position. So we get at least one more year of the SDC traditional style where everyone who shows up battles.
Lastly (For now)
We are looking for some volunteers for the Meet and Greet. A couple people to help warm the food and help serve would really make a difference for us this Thursday.
I also have a list of people who have offered to help out with the event. The more people who can would just make it a lot easier and smoother. Last year we ran into a serious hiccup and while Joe was busy trying to figure out how to run the run groups, I was feverishly modifying each competitors photos. This and some of our main help didn’t make it out, so it left us in a tough spot. We were disappointed with how the event went, so this year we are hoping to do better.
So if you would like to help and be a part of it, shoot me an email at steve.superg@gmail.com. I am hoping to have many doing a little instead of a little doing a lot.
We are looking forward to the SDC2024 Worlds! The way it’s looking right now, this is going to be our biggest and best yet! The driving has been looking amazing all season long from all over the U.S., and with our overseas Drift Family joining us, there’s no telling how this is all going to play out. I really cannot wait!
SEE YOU ALL SOON!!!
